myth
animal
another memory
and another sensation

Rinding along in the seat on back of his bike. Soft sand between my toes in the cold spring water. High up in a tree. Okanagan is ninety miles long. Her hair is yellow like sunshine. Stop and turn around. If you touch poison ivy you will get a rash every year on the same day for the rest of your life. He waits, then stealthily when no one is around, he pounces upon the unattended ham on the kitchen counter. Gramma rests her hand beneath my chin, smiling at me, she doesn't need to say anything. Wind whips wisps of loose hair. Breathing in deep wiffs of musty old books.

In Class Poetry Prompt

Advice to...
                   an unhappy face

Smile
It's a face-lift for free
You look like your waxen face
Got too close to the flame

Close your mouth when you masticate that Doublemint
Your slacken jaw like a puppy chewing a bone

Community Poetry

I have been very excited about the response I got for the community poetry project! The ladies in my book club were excited to be a part of it and wrote some really beautiful poems! Besides the lovely ladies in my book club, I have had opportunity to discuss poetry with regular customers at work and while poetry is the least read genre, there is still definitely an interest in it still out there!

Poetry Class

This poetry class definitely stretched my ideas of what a poem is, and can be. While I have learned to enjoy the wild and crazy unstructured randomness of categories such as found poetry, list poetry, flarf poetry, etc., I still enjoy, and have a soft spot for structured poetry with beautiful language and organized stanzas.

My Poem About That Social Media Site

Friends

Seven hundred and thirty five “friends”
More people known less
Or not at all

Catch up with past classmates
Without ever leaving the couch
Click and connect
More like research than relationship

Break-ups, hook-ups
Unofficial until announced
To a virtual community
Molly Jones and Nathan Peters are no longer in a relationship

Private, inner-most thoughts shared
With no one in particular
Exchanging dignity for a like
The loser didn’t pay child support again... sooo broke!

Report baby’s potty triumph
Owen did his first poo-poo in the potty!!
Drop down to
Seven hundred thirty four “friends”

Poetry Inspirations

Working on my final submission, I was looking for poetic inspiration, here is what I found:

This tip was my favourite (hold up sarcasm sign)
"Just remember to put yourself in the poem it makes it so much more beautiful!"

Recite a Poem For Me

Recite Poetry.
Roses are red,
violets are blue.
Haven't you got
anything better to do?
What is better than poetry?
OK, I found this on the web:
Web Search:
better than poetry
Sex Is Better Than Poetry by Les Barker.
Ok, recite more poetry anyways.
Oh freddled gruntbuggly
Thy micturations are to me
As plurdled gabbleblotchits
on a lurgin... Oh, even I can't listen to this anymore.
Recite a different poem
I'm not sure that's such a good idea.
I write the fourth-worst poetry in the universe.

Poem Inspired by Metaphor

In-Class stuffs revisited. Each person in the class chose an item to incorporate: orang-utan, cheese, chocolate, covered bridge, screwdriver, and pencil sharpener.

Orang-utan

The delightful, red-headed ape from the forests of Borneo stretches his arms like hot cheese from one tree to the next, his body forms a covered bridge, the dark chocolate eyes of his companion bore into his in gratitude, as a screwdriver into a bolt.
The search for sustenance proceeds as the bellies of the orang-utans rumble like pencil sharpeners.

The Lateral - by Jake Kennedy

Reading through Jake Kennedy's, The Lateral, I found that the first section was fairly lost on me. Through some quick research I discovered that Kathy Aker was a poet who passed away in 1997, but I don't have or understand Flikr, so the list format of photo files didn't really make sense to me (I look forward to his explaining it in class tomorrow!). The middle part was easier to understand and there were specific lines I really liked such as "And what of those cultures in which a distinction between artist and non-artist does not exist? How much more beauiful would beauty be there? How much less beautiful?" (32) and the concept of the poem on page 39, of robots writing poems I found very interesting. As for the third and final section... well I definitely noticed a theme there!

writing prompts from class

While some poetry, like Jordan Scott's blert, are better read aloud, I find that the homonym poems we did in class last week are better read so you can see the different words used and their other meanings in context to the rest of the poem.

Here is the small bit I got in class. I do hope to add to it at some point.

fast paste wry bread roles
made with time
served with whine
on summary daze

Jordan Scott Link

A YouTube video of Jordan Scott reading from blert. I find I always enjoy poetry more when it is being read aloud. It is around 1:51 that he starts reading from the beginning of the book. Enjoy!

blert

I read Jordon Scott's blert over the weekend and found if very difficult to read. I guess that was maybe the point seeing this book of poetry represents stuttering, and the author notes in the back that he wanted it to be as difficult as possible to read. There were little bits like "word order = world adour" (13) that I enjoyed, but for the most part, it just gave me a headache. I did notice themes involving the mouth and speech and others such as ice and stanza with words starting/containing the same letters which I assume are words that are difficult for stutterers to say.
